Treatment of Cataract in earlier days :-

In the ancient times, Sushrut treated cataract with “couching,” where the human cataractous opaque lens was pushed backward into the eye to make the visual axis transparent.

Surgical Techniques

The Cataract surgery evolved in different stages over the time.

1. Aphakic Era : - When the eye is made Aphakic i.e. the human eye is made devoid of lens by bringing out Cataractous opaque human lens through large section. In this condition patient has to wear thick glass/spectacle after the surgery.
2. Pseudophakic Era :- In this surgery, large incision is made then Cataract is removed and an artificial rigid Lens is placed and suture is given and bandage is applied.
3. Era of Phacoemulcification:- In this surgery a small port of 3.2mm is made, Cataract is broken down in many small pieces through Ultrasonic waves of Phaco probe. Through that small port Foldable lens is introduced into the eye.
Disadvantage of Conventional Phaco procedure:-
Large section causing more cylindrical power Huge amount of energy is released causing poor recovery and corneal blindness. Difficulty in removing hard cataract.

Era of Micro Phaco (MICS) with Cold Ozil Technology

In this surgery, a smaller port/section of about 2mm is made which enables early recovery within 3-4 days after Micro Incision Cataract surgery (MICS). With availability of Cold Ozil Technology, hard Cataract could also be emulcified or removed without causing heat related corneal damage. With MICS there is faster recovery by early healing of the wound.
